Candles at Home: Small Details That Bring Warmth to a Space

Candles at Home: Small Details That Bring Warmth to a Space

As a ceramicist, I naturally use a lot of the pieces I make to decorate our house, especially my candle holders and match pots. They’ve slowly become a part of how I style each room, and recently I’ve been pairing them with different candles around the house.

The combination has become one of my favourite ways to bring in colour and create little moments of atmosphere.

Here are a few candle scenes, along with some simple ideas if you ever feel like changing the mood of your own space.

1. Creating Interest with Colour on Open Shelves

Candles work beautifully on open shelving because they add both height and personality without overwhelming the space. Choosing colours that echo tones in nearby artwork can subtly tie everything together.

2. Treating Candles Like Flowers

Gathering candles in a jug or a vase has become an unexpected favourite. It’s a little “candle bouquet” that feels playful but still elegant. It’s especially handy on days when you don’t have fresh flowers but want something with presence.

3. Soft Corners with Soft Colours

Pieces in soft tones work particularly well in rooms that get a lot of daylight - they reflect the light and keep the space feeling airy.

If you have a corner that needs a bit of warmth or sweetness, a small cluster of candles in a pretty pot works wonders.

4. Matching Tones for a Cohesive Look

Pairing candle colours with the holders is a fun way to create harmony (or add playfulness!) on a shelf or console, and tie in with the books and artwork around them.

Candles are brilliant for this - they let you experiment with colour in a very low-commitment way.

5. Candles as tiny mood-lifters

Everywhere I place candles, the room instantly feels elevated.

They’re the easiest way to make a moment feel thoughtful:

  • on the dining table
  • next to a stack of books
  • by a framed print
  • on a wooden dresser
  • tucked into a corner with a plant

They’re small details, but they make the home feel warm and lived-in, especially in these darker months.

Looking Ahead

Because candles have become such a natural part of my styling, I’m planning to bring a small selection of beautiful tapers to the shop soon - colours and finishes that pair nicely with my ceramics.

More on that soon…
